Primates Trekking Rules and Regulations
- In case Nyungwe Forest National Park is your next dream destination, the following are some rules and regulations while on your primates tracking tour.
- First, you are required to keep a distance of 8 meters away from these creatures.
- Chimpanzees like any large ape are susceptible to human infectious diseases. They share about 98% of their DNA with humans.
- Chimpanzee tracking is strictly for only 6 people in a group.
- For visitors with flue or diarrhea, you may not be permitted to go and track.
- Don’t eat next to the chimpanzees if you want to enjoy this Rwanda primates tour safari
- If your camera has a flashlight; you are advised to turn it off while taking photos.
- Chimpanzees require maximum freedom and this means they don’t need to be irritated once you are in the forest.
- You have only 1 hour to be with the chimpanzees

7 Days Rwanda Primates Safari Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Rwanda, Transfer to Kigali
A guide from Gorilla Adventure tours will pick you up from Kigali international airport or your Hotel. After a comprehensive review of the 7 Days Rwanda primates safari highlights, you will transfer to a preferred Hotel for your accommodation in Kigali for dinner and overnight.
Day 2: Transfer to Nyungwe National Park
After having your early morning breakfast, you will start your transfer to Nyungwe forest national park, located south of Rwanda. To create a memorable adventure safari, expect journey stopovers visiting the Nyanza Royal Palace. Drive past green fields of tea scattered on the hillside slopes and the small wooden houses unique to the areas surrounding Nyungwe Forest.
Day 3: Chimpanzee Tracking, Guided Canopy Walk in Nyungwe Forest
Early morning, you will be served breakfast and after leave with your packed lunch to go for a guided chimpanzee trekking adventure which will last for about 1-4 hours. You will then go for a canopy walk within the forest. Specifically, the canopy walk is good for birders so as to enable them to spot a variety of bird species within the forest. While enjoying the canopy walk, look out for birds like the Rwenzori Turaco, black and white casqued hornbill and also do not miss spots of large troops of colobus monkeys.
After the day’s adventure, return to the lodge in the evening for dinner and overnight stay as above. Meal plan: Full Board
Day 4: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
After breakfast at the Guesthouse or lodge, you will drive back to Kigali. While en-route, you will visit the Botanical Gardens and the cultural museum in Butare. Continue and arrive in Kigali in time for Lunch. After lunch, you will drive northwards to Kinigi via Musanze. En route, the journey offers you beautiful scenery of rolling hills for which the country Rwanda is well known.
On your arrival in Musanze, you will check-in at Mountain Gorilla View Lodge/Lapalme Hotel/Muhabura Guest House for dinner and overnight. Meal plan: Full Board
Day 5: Gorilla Trekking, Visit The Twin lakes
Expect this day to be a thrilling adventure and epitome of your 7 Days Rwanda Primates safari. The day starts with an early breakfast at your Hotel or Lodge, you will then head to the park headquarters in Kinigi for a briefing from the RDB wardens. After the briefing, you will then head for gorilla trekking within Volcanoes National Park with the rest of the trackers.
Your encounter with these man’s closest shy friends will be a highlight of your Rwanda Safari and the experience you will get this day, will be memorable and your safari will be a once in a lifetime to remember. Gorilla tracking/trekking can take 2 to 8 hours within this jungle forest and it depends on the movement of the Gorillas on the previous and that particular day.
After the trek, return to the park office for your gorilla trekking certificate and then drive back to your lodge and relax. In the evening visit the twin lakes (Burera and Ruhondo) and over here you will spot a variety of bird-life species. Dinner and overnight as the previous day. Meal plan: Full Board
Day 6: Dian Fossey Grave Hike/Karisoke Research Center
After an early breakfast, you will go to the park offices for briefing, then you can visit the Karisoke Research center which was established by Diane Fossey who was well known as a woman who protected the Mountain Gorillas. The Research center was established for habituation and deeper study of the Mountain Gorillas. Dinner and Overnight as the previous day.
Day 7: Transfer to Kigali city, Departure
Wake up early, take breakfast and transfer to Kigali city set off. You will have a city tour to most of the historical places like genocide memorial site and the national museum. You will have lunch then the driver will drop you to the airport or hotel in Kigali.
