Mgahinga National Park also commonly known as Mgahinga Gorilla Park is one of Uganda’s smallest Parks famous for harboring some of the endangered Mountain Gorillas found in Virungas. Mgahinga Park shares borders with the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Republic of Rwanda.
Gorilla Trekking in Mgahinga Park
A Gorilla Tour to Track the Nyakagezi Gorilla family, the only Gorilla Group found in Mgahinga starts at 8:00am from Ntebeko gate. The armed game rangers lead the tourists through the forests so as to find the mountain gorillas and the tourists stay with the gorillas for a period of 1 hour. The Gorilla trekking exercise last from 1 – 4 hours to make all Gorilla Tours complete
Endangered and edermic to to Mgahinga Park, the Golden Monkeys (Ceropithecus Kandti) sometimes referred to as a distinctive race of the more widespread blue monkey C.mitis) sharing borders with the Nyakagezi Gorilla Family, can be tracked in this park in the morning hours
Bird Watching in Mgahinga
This takes place in the Bamboo forest in montane at the ravine of mountain Sabinyo and Gahinga. Here you will find and monitor the gorgeous and attractive Rwenzori Turaco, over 115 bird species to be viewed.
Batwa Trail and Cultural Encounters
The dense forests in Mgahinga Park were previously occupied by the pygmies or Batwa tribe which gave way to Batwa Trail and other cultural activities. Encountering different communities around the park that have been occupied by pygmies(Batwa)for generations, Mgahinga’s forests are known to be homes for the indigenous Batwa hunters, fierce warriors and fruit gatherers who depended on the entire forests for survival.
During the Batwa Trail, the pygimies demonstrate their ways of lives to the Tourists through hunting, traditional medicines, music and dance etc.
Mountain Hiking in Mgahinga
All the 3 volcanoes of Gahinga, Sabyinyo and Muhabura in Mgahinga National Park can be summited, taking a full day each, ranging from 7 – 9 hours. The most interesting Volcano to hike is Sabyinyo where by the summit lands the climber in 3 countries of Uganda, Rwanda and Congo at ago.
