3 Days Rwanda Gorilla Tour
When preparing for gorilla trekking in Rwanda to Volcanoes national park it’s very important to book your gorilla permit in advance months before the actual date of the Trip. We have compiled a list of the habituated gorilla families in Rwanda’ Volcanoes national park plus each family characteristics. There are 56 gorilla permits available for sale every day. This number varies only when some of these gorilla groups cross over to the Virungas in DR Congo.
Susa Group/ Family: Comprising of 41 members, Susa group is the largest gorilla family. It consists of 3 silver-backs, several black backs, females and youngsters. The 5 year old twins, Byishimo and Impano exhibiting their antics, make this group a dream for every visitor to Volcanoes. This family roams the slopes of Karisimbi Volcano (4507M).
Sabyinyo Group: With 8 Sabinyo gorilla family led by the most gigantic silverback in the Volcanoes national park called Guhonda, is normally the most accessible of all members.
Amahoro Gorilla Family :- This family is made of of 17 members under the leadership of the peaceful Ubumwe. Amahoro is a more strenuous to access compared to Group 13 or Sabyinyo.
Kwitonda Gorilla group: This family migrated from DR Congo and is comprised of 18 members under the leadership of Kwitonda silverback – which is translated as “the most humble one”. The group consists of 2 silverbacks and one black back. The group inhabits the Virunga section of the park. Tracking this group is as difficult as Susa.
Group 13 ( Agashya) consists of 25 members. It was named Agashya sine at the time of habituation, there were only 13 members but have now grown to 25 members.
Umubano Gorilla Family: Consists of 11 members. Umubano split from Amahoro group after the dominant silverback was wrestled down by Charles, the present leading silverback of Umubano.
Hirwa Gorilla Family was formed by members from Group 13 and Sabinyo.
